Scientists say that, recently, a decrease in the number of local and migratory birds at the sanctuary has been noticed. However, they have identified new areas, adjacent to the sanctuary, that are havens for birds. These include Kaipuzha Muttu, Pathiramanal, Narakathara and Thollairam Kayal. Mooleppadam and Manchadikari are two other neighbouring areas with a rich bird life.
