Baker’s agricultural innovation - the conversion of the backwaters into cultivable land - was later put into practice by many land owners in the Kuttanad area. Thomas Murikkan was one among the most illustrious followers of the Baker family. In the 1940s, he reclaimed 1800 acres and used the land for paddy cultivation.
The followers of Baker’s farming methods created polders, enclosed by bunds, on the reclaimed land. Within a short period, about 720 acres of land was readied for cultivation in Kumarakom alone.
