The Kumarakom bird sanctuary with its fantastic avian life, mangrove forests, coconut groves, and stunning landscape is an ornithologist’s delight.
The sanctuary has the largest number of heron species in the State. During the ’70s, it was the only breeding place for night herons. The White Ibis, Large Egret, Purple heron, Indian shag, the darter and the Little Cormorant are also found here.
The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation has set up a resort, Waterscapes, near the bird sanctuary. At present it has one bird watching tower. There are plans to set up two more bird watching towers, with one dedicated for research, inside the sanctuary.
