It is perhaps the most sought after Ayurveda
center in Kerala where the nuances of Ayurveda the pristine wisdom of holistic
health as propounded in the vedas is practiced in its entirety. Over the years
Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala grew in stature and today its transnational fame
bring in people from far flung places to seek the best in Ayurveda, which is
readily available at Kottakkal.
Established in 1902, by Vaidyaratnam Mr. P.S. Warrier for the preparation of
authentic Ayurvedic medicines, the Arya Vaidya Sala is today the largest and
most trusted institution of its kind in India. As part of its activities, the
centre cultivates medicinal plants, manufactures medicines, conducts research
programmes, publishes books and seminar reports on Ayurveda and related
subjects. It has one Ayurvedic Hospital at Kottakkal in Kerala and another in
New Delhi. Mr. P. S. Warrier, founder of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala was a
renowned Ayurvedic scholar and academician, an able practitioner; a successful
entrepreneur. Mr. Warrier studied Ayurveda under the classical Gurukula system.
He also acquired proficiency in the practice of Allopathy.
Today, Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala is a name synonymous with Ayurveda; a name
that offers a new lease of life to the suffering humanity. In 1933, in
recognition of his valuable services to humanity, Sri P. S. Varier was conferred
the distinguished title of 'Vaidyaratna' by His Excellency the Viceroy and
Governor General of India.
In 1944, after the demise of Mr. P. S. Wrarier, the center was converted into a
Charitable Trust as desired by him. From then onwards till date the Kottakkal
Arya Vaidya Sala had been functioning as a Charitable Trust. Today. Dr. P. K.
Warrier, who is the nephew of its founder Mr. P. S. Warrier heads the center and
is also the chief physician, assisted by other senior and experienced
physicians.
Mr. P. K. Warrier is the recipient of the prestigious national award
‘Padmashri’ by the Government of India, given in recognition of his
outstanding work. He also received the honorary degree of D. Litt. by Calicut
University. The coveted Dhanvanthari Award for 2001 was also awarded to him.
Major chunk of Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala is spent on charitable causes, in the
form of medical aid and others. Financial assistance is also provided for
managing an affiliated Ayurveda college. Research, seminars and training
programmes are some of the regular activities at Kottakal, and have several
publications to its credit. It has a well-maintained herbal garden and runs a
Kathakali Academy.
