Kanhangad, the commercial hub of the district, is situated about 28 kms from Kasaragod town. Kanhangad lies at the junction between the two major cities of Mangalore and Kannur. Though the most widely-used language here is Malayalam, Tulu, Konkani and Kannada-speaking communities also reside in this area.
There are a significant number of tourist destinations around the area, such as the Hosdurg fort, Nityananda Ashram, Gandhi smrithi mandapam, Anandashram, Bekal Fort, to name a few.
River Arayi, originating from Madikai panchayat, passes through Kanhangad before merging with River Neeleshwar.
The place is also famous for the popular ritual art form Theyyam. Kerala Lalithakala Academy, a popular art organization, which has served as a platform for various artists, is also situated here.
