Peruvamba is a tiny hamlet located around 15 kms from Palakkad town. The village is famous for its skilled craftsmen, considered the finest makers of percussion instruments like Chenda, Maddalam, Idakka, Mridangam, and others. These artists have been carrying on this tradition for nearly 200 years. Peruvamba’s contribution to the cultural landscape of Kerala is truly noteworthy.
The method itself involves tedious rituals, and demands a level of precision that takes years of experience to master. Although the artists are often plagued by social and financial problems, the village continues to be a major producer of musical instruments in Kerala.
