The village of Puliyamkulam is about 35 kms from Bekal. The village shot into fame due to the efforts of one man, P. Abdul Kareem. Kareem, who was a travel agent, converted the wastelands of his village into areas of fertile greenery.
He first bought five acres of wasteland and planted saplings that withered away in no time. After incessant attempts over many years, his efforts finally bore fruit. Soon he bought another 27 acres of barren land which, with his incredible hard work and tenacity, he converted into a fertile area. After 28 years of relentless effort, Kareem is now the owner of India's first private sanctuary - Forest Park.
Apart from the nearly 300 species of flowering plants that Kareem planted, the sanctuary is rich in diverse species of trees, herbs and medicinal plants. The fauna include small wild animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, etc.
The Park is now frequently visited by scientists, research scholars and tourists.
