Valapattanam, about seven kms from Kannur, situated on the banks of River Valapattanam, is known for its wood-based industries. The largest such industry in the country – Western India Plywoods Limited – is based here.
It is a major centre for timber trade and other expensive wood. Apart from its wood and wood-based industries, Valapattanam is known for mangrove forests, and has a fishing harbour. The mangroves and the surrounding regions are home to a number of medicinal plants and many varieties of birds, including migratory ones.
The Azheekal beach nearby is another tourist attraction. Motorboat and houseboat cruises on the river are arranged by the tourism authorities, on request.
