Beypore

About 10 km from Kozhikode, this is where the Chaliyar joins the sea. It was an internationally known port of call for trading ships even from the ancient days. Beypore later became an important ship building centre with the Arab traders preferring to have their sailing ships or urus built here with the fine teak wood cut from Kerala's forests and floated downriver. The ship building tradition is some 1500 years old. Now Beypore is also a fishing harbour. Nearby is the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary.
