Topography and Climate
The Periyar Tiger Reserve with an area of 777 sq km lies between 90’ 40’ N and 770 55’ E & 770 25’ E. It falls in the districts of Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts in Kerala. The sanctuary comprises tropical evergreen, semi evergreen, moist deciduous forests and grasslands. The Periyar lake occupies the central portion of the park.
Seven types of vegetation have been identified at the Periyar Tiger Reserve (Champion and Seth). They are west coast tropical evergreen forests, southern hilltop tropical evergreen forests, west coast semi evergreen forests, southern moist mixed deciduous forests, southern montane wet temperate forests, southern montane wet grasslands and south Indian subtropical hill savannahs.
