Kara- a venture to promote Kerala Handloom

Published in Newsletter Issue No. 184 - 01-Dec-2008

Many are the traditional marvels of Kerala, which without fail have captivated the minds of its visitors. And the earnest efforts of a voluntary organization called ‘Kara’ (meaning brocade) is all set to transform the handloom sector of Kerala more attractive than before. Associating with the members of the weaving community across Kerala, especially the independent groups, the focus of Kara is on creating excellent handmade home furnishing material.

The endeavor by Kara gains significance in the backdrop of many traditional skills of Kerala, especially those in the field of handicrafts and handloom losing their way, due to lack of patronization, new concepts and market reach. Drawing the attention of people leading modern trends in lifestyle towards practices with an indelible mark of traditional Kerala is another of Kara’s objectives through this venture. Towels, cushion covers and curtains are the main products of Kara. The group is spearheaded by noted film personality and social activist Ms. Revathy, social scientist and anthropologist Ms. Indu Menon, packaging and product expert Ms. Suryakala Satish and Ms. B. Sreedevi an expert in Kerala handloom fabric and technique. For more details, log on to www.karaweaves.com
