Responsible Tourism initiatives in Kovalam inaugurated
Kovalam became the second destination to get off the ground in the Responsible Tourism initiative. Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister for Tourism, inaugurated the Responsible Tourism initiatives in Kovalam. With this, micro enterprises built up under the aegis of Kudumbasree and the local panchayat, will supply raw materials like eggs, fruits, vegetables, milk and meat to hotels. Mr Sudheish Kumar, representing the hoteliers of Kovalam informed that the hotel industry in Kovalam is committed to purchasing the products of the local community. The President of the local panchayat assured all assistance to the self help groups of the community.
The project will at first concentrate on economic responsibility, said Dr. Venu, V., Secretary, Kerala Tourism. The concept of responsible tourism will soon be introduced in Thekkady and Wayanad. Through workshops, surveys and dialogues with various stakeholders, the idea will be made within reach of all strata of society, he added.
