Project Muziris gets cabinet clearance
The Kerala Government recently gave the go-ahead for the Rs.1400 million Muziris Cultural Heritage Conservation Project. The project has been conceived for the preservation and restoration of heritage sites spread over a large area in the central districts of Thrissur and Ernakulam. These are the oldest heritage sites in Kerala.
The Union Government would bear fifty per cent of the total project cost and the project would be undertaken with the participation of local-self-governments, government departments and institutions.
The project area is replete with historic monuments and buildings. These include palaces, forts, places of worship and residences of noted personalities. While these structures would be restored to its original glory, the project would also provide facilities that would promote cultural and heritage tourism in the area. The project once completed would generate local level employment thereby improving the economic welfare of the people in the region.
