Impressive growth in revenue for tourism in 2008
The year 2008, turned out to be an impressive one for Kerala Tourism in the revenue front, in spite of the unfavourable global financial scenario. As per official figures, the foreign exchange earnings from tourism in 2008 grew by 16.11 percent, fetching earnings to the tune of Rs.30,665.2 million. And the net revenue, comprising both direct and indirect showed an increase of 14.84 per cent, which translates to Rs.131,300 million.
In 2007, the total foreign exchange earnings for Kerala Tourism was Rs.26,409.4 million, while the total revenue stood at Rs.114,330 million.
Expressing his satisfaction, the Minister for Tourism, Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said: “It is highly encouraging that 2008 was not at all bad for Kerala Tourism in terms of revenue achieved and tourist arrivals, especially in the wake of the global financial crisis.”
The foreign tourist arrivals in Kerala was 5,98,929 in 2008, compared to 5,15,808 in 2007, showing an increase in growth of 16.11 per cent. January recorded the maximum number of foreign tourist arrivals (85,028) to Kerala in 2008, while the lowest was in June, at 20,578.
This is an outcome of Kerala Tourism re-working its strategies and reflecting the same in its marketing efforts, which eventually made 2008 a memorable one for Kerala Tourism, irrespective of the odds, said Secretary for Kerala Tourism, Dr. Venu V.
In the domestic front, in 2008, Kerala witnessed 75,91,250 domestic tourist arrivals, showing a growth of 14.28 per cent from the previous year. And in the case of domestic tourist arrivals, the month of December recorded the maximum number (7,50,415) of arrivals in 2008, while the lowest (5,74,544) was in July.
