Responsible Tourism becomes more responsible

With more and more destinations in Kerala accepting the responsible tourism mode, the existing major destinations like Thekkady, Kovalam, Kumarakom and Wayanad are getting more responsible, with an increased number of local people becoming part of the venture. Many non-governmental organizations have also come forth to be part of the much-acclaimed initiative.

In Wayanad, 20 odd hotels have joined the venture, by expressing their willingness to collect organic farm products from the rural farmers. Kudumbasree projects and NGO groups like Uravu are doing their best in this regard.

In Kumarakom, 15 hotels have come forth and over 500 farmers are there, to boost the trend. In Thekkady, 750 farmers and 20-odd hotels do it all, with the backing of many governmental as well as non-governmental agencies. Along with this, more attractions have been recently added in Kumarakom, which are sure to offer travelers a unique Kerala feel. Remarkable among them is a tour package called ‘Kumarakom Village Experience Canal Ride’, prepared by DTPC. This package, which offers the travelers a close-to-heart journey in the picturesque village, having close contact with the local people, will be beneficial for both the sides.

In Kovalam, the assistance of local population is more visible in the basic amenities development sector. With the season on the go, the active participation of the residents here is changing the trends. Dr. Venu, V., Secretary, Kerala Tourism, has said that this already is a sparkling trend, and Kerala Tourism will solicit all efforts to make Kerala the most attractive responsible tourism destination of the world.
