At the International Performing Arts Festival Murcia OTHER- OTRO 2009 in Spain, the audience were treated to a refreshing piece of dance-drama. Made possible as part of project KIS-Kathakali in Spain, a dance-drama performance combining the dashing Flamenco and the resplendent Kathakali enthralled the audience that combined well to reflect the sufferings of modern-day women. The theme was presented through a situation from Mahabharata dealing with events that eventually end up with the assassination of Dussasana.
The 45-minute performance titled-Killing of Dussasana symbolized the fusion between the two elegant and poignant art forms of Kathakali and Flamenco, which attempted to raise awareness on gender violence. Dance and theatre eventually came together in an attempt to raise awareness and break a curse of our times-violence against women. Artiste such as Carmen "La Talegona" who belong to a family with a strong tradition of Flamenco dancing and innovative guitarists such as Julián Vaquero currently offering new modern music styles and three Kathakali actors from Kerala, G. N. Bijukumar, N. Bijulal and A. N. Gireesan, showed that a fusion between such distinctive art forms is possible, enabling viewers to appreciate two distant; yet two very close forms of art. The performance had César Lorente Ratón taking care of the art direction, with Miguel Angel Rodriguez looking after the technical aspects.
KIS in collaboration with institutions and agencies in Spain and India seeks to disseminate knowledge and art centenary of Kerala such as Kathakali. The main objectives are to facilitate learning methods and knowledge of Kathakali through development and promotion of audiovisuals, theater performances, workshops and seminars as well as new proposals. The main proposal is aimed KIS Kathakali merge with Spanish performing arts.
Flamenco is an art form that comes from the South of Spain, which appeared in the XVIIth century approximately that fed itself, along the years, from the Persian laud, the gipsy passion, the traditional dances from the Southern tip of the peninsula and the songs sang by miners. Flamenco is not only a dance but also a form of music that uses a wide range of instruments such as symphonic instruments of European origins and the cajon-a drum box that comes from Peru.
