KERALA TOURISM NEWSLETTER
Waiting in the wings
A pristine forest destination awaits its turn to inspire visitors. Sanghili, a forest area near Palode in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala has caught the attention of the Forest Department and efforts are underway to declare it as an eco-tourism destination.
Sanghili is noted for its not so common wild animals, medicinal herbs and rich avian life. Not only is the destination going to get the tag of another eco-tourism destination in Kerala, but it will also be promoted as an ideal one for adventure seeking visitors.
The forest trek being envisaged here would take one through some of the exciting stretches of this nature rich forest area. A two-day trek covering about 54 km would be a feast for the eyes. En route to the upper sanatorium at the Ponmudi hill station, one could enjoy the presence of wildlife and several bird species, besides the captivating presence of three waterfalls. The waterfall at Vellimala is perhaps the most spectacular of sights among the waterfalls here, which cascades down from a height of about 200 m in five stages. The trek would go beyond Ponmudi and would go past places like Pandi Motta, Kannu Ketti, a couple of tea estates and up to the periphery of the Mundanthurai forest area in the adjoining state of Tamil Nadu.
