It all started with the Portuguese

The historic landmark at Thangasseri in Kollam district is gearing up to make its presence felt, more prominently on the tourism map of Kerala. With the landscaped park coming up at Thangasseri, the ruins of the 16th century Portuguese-built Fort Thomas would get a much needed facelift. Located within the fishing harbour complex, the park is part of the comprehensive project that would highlight the historical and geographical significance of Thangasseri.

The second phase of the project would involve the construction of lookouts into the sea and a winding pathway leading to the inspection bungalow of the Harbour Engineering Department, situated on the periphery of the lighthouse built by the British.

The Archaeological Survey of India has given the go-ahead for the project and the work on the landscaped park would be carried out by the Harbour Engineering Department. From the Portuguese, the fort at Thangasseri passed down hands, which saw the Dutch and by the 18th century the British taking control of it.

Interestingly, adding more attraction to the development works at Thangasseri is the marine attraction that has developed as a result of the breakwater. The area has become a reef and home to marine life forms not commonly found in the coastal waters in this region.
