An eco-township would be set up in the hill station of Munnar. According to Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Tourism Minister, Munnar with its rich wealth of flora and fauna deserves added measures for safeguarding its natural wealth. The government would prepare a master plan for Munnar Eco-township. And that master plan would clearly define the different zones meant for commercial, residential, leisure and recreational use. "Munnar would be developed as an international eco-tourism destination," he said.

Bekal is another destination in Kerala, which is getting transformed into an international tourism destination this year. Bekal in Kasaragod district is the first destination selected for planned development by Kerala Tourism.
