KTDC's convention centre at Kovalam
A convention centre in memory of the late Col. Godavarma Raja, popular as G. V. Raja of the Travancore royal family would come up at Kovalam. The project executed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) would be built in the premises of the beachside KTDC hotel - Samudra in Kovalam.
The foundation stone for the work on the G. V. Raja Convention Centre was recently laid by the Minister for Tourism, Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Kovalam is an ideal destination for MICE Tourism and the upcoming convention centre would strengthen the overall MICE Tourism initiatives of Kerala.
The convention centre on completion would have a capacity to seat 1000 persons. The centre with all modern facilities will have separate enclosures for convention and dining. Once it becomes functional, the convention centre will encourage stake-holders in the tourism industry of Kerala to organize events of national and international stature. The convention centre will be the first such venture of KTDC and the second in the famed beach resort.
Sharing his thoughts, Mr. Cherian Philip, Chairman KTDC said that it is the availability of adequate rooms in Samudra; the beach resort and the presence of all classes of hotels nearby plus availability of land needed for the project that has prompted KTDC to set up the convention centre at Kovalam. The easy accessibility to the convention centre from the international airport is another major reason for locating it at Samudra, he added.
KTDC rightly dedicated the upcoming convention centre to the late Col. Godavarma Raja, who is considered as the 'Father of Kerala Tourism' coinciding with his birth centenary. He was also the first Chairman of KTDC.
