Malankara tourism project inaugurated
As part of developmental efforts in Idukki, the hill district of Kerala with many noted travel destinations, a new project was recently inaugurated to bolster its tourism. The Malankara Tourism Project was launched recently by the Minister for Tourism, Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan at Malankara dam in Kattappana.
The Malankara Tourism Project envisages beautification of Malankara dam, which would have a garden modeled on the one at Malampuzha dam in the district of Palakkad. A park would also be set up on an island, adjacent to the dam site, which sprawls over 15 acres of land. This park would aid in the protection of trees on the island and would also become home to new saplings and flowering plants.
Authorities say the Malankara project would combine elements of hydel tourism and natural beauty. A boat service to the island is also part of the project. Unlike other dams in Kerala such as Idukki and Cheruthoni, which are open to public only on certain occasions, the Malankara dam will be open to tourists round the year.
