New tourism development initiatives in Kerala
Kerala Tourism these days is experimenting with new ideas to promote the growth of domestic and foreign tourist arrivals. Attending the valedictory function of the two-day state-level camp for tourism clubs at Kumbalangi in Kochi, the Minister for Tourism, Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that sustained efforts of the state government for tourism promotion have led to the establishment of 35 Destination Management Councils. And these councils are giving due significance to participation and joint action at the local level, which would serve better for destination development.
Further, the tourism minister said that the newly formed councils will be funded by the state government for spearheading developmental activities at various destinations. These councils will have the local MLA as chairman and the panchayat president as vice-chairman. Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan also said that the tourism clubs at each destination should be made part of this new development process. The state has 400 active tourism clubs among schools and colleges. The tourism clubs in the state can play a significant role in promoting heritage tourism, the minister added.
