Muziris heritage project to be developed as a 'Spice Route'
Muziris Heritage project at Kodungallur is all poised to get the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) recognition as a heritage site. Muziris once had a thriving port in the first century B.C. and served as the gateway to Kerala for various religious faiths like Christianity, Judaism, Islam and others. Keeping up with the significance of the Muziris heritage project, authorities are going to develop the site as a 'Spice Route' which would gain attention as a spice route via sea, along with well known historic spice routes over the land, linking India to destinations in South East Asia and Central Asia.
Sharing his thoughts on the project, Finance Minister, Mr. Thomas Isaac said that by developing Muziris heritage site as a 'Spice Route', the destination stands to become one of the world's biggest heritage-conservation cum tourism projects with the entire coastal stretch of Kerala becoming part of it.
By releasing 'Muziris Newsletter' Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister for Tourism, said that the project 'Muziris' literally has become inspirational for conservation of heritage sites across Kerala and also has given a new awareness on Kerala's cultural and historical monuments.
