Kerala State Tourism Awards presented

The Kerala State Tourism Awards for 2009-2010 were given away by the Minister for Tourism, Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, at a function held at the Mascot Hotel in the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram.

Among the award winners were Intersight Tours and Travels (P) Ltd., Kochi, The Great India Tour Company (P) Ltd, Thiruvananthapuram and the KTDC Hotels and Resorts for the best inbound tour operator, the best outbound operator and the most innovative use of information technology respectively.

The award for the best tourist destination went to Snehatheeram in Thrissur district. The awards for hotels and resorts in various categories went to Periyar House, Thekkady for the best one star/two star hotel; Marari Beach for the best three-star hotel and for the best innovative tourism project; Spice Village, Thekkady for the best four-star hotel; The Gateway Hotel, Marine Drive, Kochi for the best five-star hotel and The Le Meridian Cochin Resort and Convention Centre, for the best five-star deluxe hotel. The award for the best heritage hotel went to Coconut Lagoon, Kumarakom and the award for the best approved ayurvedic centre went to Somatheeram Ayurvedic Hospital and Yoga Centre (P) Ltd, Chowara. Mr. P. Subrahmanian, General Manager of Marari Beach bagged the award for the best hotel manager.

In other award categories, Rainbow Cruises, Alappuzha received the award for the best approved houseboat operator and the award for the best approved homestay went to Coconut Creek Farm, Kumarakom. In the media related awards category, the award for the best tourism related report was bagged by Mr. T. J. Sreejith of Mathrubhumi Yatra Magazine and the best photography award went to Mr. Leen Thobias of P4 Panorama, Kottayam.

Among institutions and individuals in the academic field, the Oriental School of Hotel Management, Wayanad; Chattanchal Higher Secondary School, Kasaragod; Mr. Shahariyar of Darul Uloom VHSS, Pullepady, Ernakulam and Ms. Sijimol Jacob, Vocational Teacher, Travel and Tourism, Darul Uloom VHSS, Pullepady, Ernakulam won the awards for the best tourism / hotel management institute, the best tourism club, the best student coordinator and the best teacher coordinator respectively.

The awards for the best tourist police, the best tourist guide and the best lifeguard went to Mr. Satyan, C., Tourist Police, Kannur City Police Station, Mr. K. Mohan of Kozhikode and Mr. S. Harichandra Babu respectively.
