OCTOBER 2010

World Tourism Day observed

World Tourism Day on 27th September was celebrated throughout the state by Kerala Tourism. A vehicle rally, awareness programmes, launch of courses in tourism and of innovative tourism products, an open forum, seminars, quiz, essay and painting competitions and cultural programmes were held in various parts of Kerala as part of tourism day celebrations. The Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS) joined hands with Kerala Tourism and the District Tourism Promotion Council in all the districts to organize various programmes.

Tourism and Biodiversity - the theme for this year's World Tourism Day - is particularly relevant as 2010 has been declared as International Year of Biodiversity by the U.N. Biodiversity is a key tourism asset and is fundamental to its sustained growth.

Gifted with beautiful mangroves and ecosystems across Kerala, the development of tourism spots in Kerala mainly focuses on a sustainable model. Sustainable tourism would be able to generate significant revenue for conservation and community development and also helps to raise awareness on biodiversity issues.

Kerala Tourism planners are of the opinion that more effort is needed to sustain biodiversity in the tourism sector of the State, even though Kerala Tourism has overtaken others in the implementation of Responsible Tourism initiatives in the country.
