The Iringal Art and Craft village, designed to re-invigorate the handicraft expertise of Kerala, is gearing up for its opening in February 2011. Short-listing of artisans and allotting of huts have been finalized. The village has already caught the attention of various players in the travel and tourism industry of Kerala.
Kerala Tourism is looking forward to have this craft village get a firm footing in the travel and tourism industry of Kerala for wider reach and popularity. Of late, travellers coming to Kerala are evincing keen interest in exploring the culture and heritage of Kerala. The handicrafts of Kerala form an integral part of this. Being the case, the Art and Craft Village at Iringal would convincingly meet the interest of travellers to have detailed study and better understanding of Kerala handicrafts. Since the craft village is a permanent one, travellers, even after getting back to their respective countries, can keep in touch with the village and place orders.
Set up by Kerala Tourism, this project, first of its kind in the state, will provide artisans facilities for producing handicrafts, showcase their skills and also to market their products. Located by the side of the Moorad River on a 20-acre land, this village currently has 32 cottages meant for about 100 artisans to stay and work at a time.
