Keralam - Museum of History and Heritage was recently opened in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. It is a joint venture of Kerala Tourism and the State Department of Archaeology. Inaugurated by Mr. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, Minister for Tourism, this heritage museum itself is housed in a building that exudes a mixture of traditional and colonial architecture.
"Set up in Park View building, a heritage structure in Thiruvananthapuram, the heritage museum was conceived as an arena to exhibit historical artifacts, which had been kept away from public gaze in storages because of lack of facilities for display," said Dr. Venu V., Secretary, Kerala Tourism.
The exhibits in Keralam will give the visitor a visual treat across different periods in the history of Kerala that include the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Megalithic and Mesolithic periods. The museum also uses modern display techniques such as touch-screen counters and multimedia systems to explain the artifacts arranged in different galleries and to screen narrative documentaries on the distinctive facets of Kerala's cultural history.
The galleries inside the museum feature a rich array of rock paintings and engravings, sculptures, idols and tools in stone, metal and wood, ancient frescoes and murals and different art forms. A royal horse drawn coach and two ancient cannons are displayed at the museum entrance. A souvenir shop and mini seminar hall are also part of the museum. Entry to the museum will be through tickets.
