Steps to make Kollam an international tourist destination
Kollam's tourism potential will be tapped and developed to international standards, said Mr. A. P. Anilkumar, Minister for Tourism. For evaluating and implementing the development projects, an organising committee including the Chief Minister and other ministers as patrons has been formed. The District Collector will be the general convener of this committee.
As part of the development programme, the committee has decided to conduct an annual boat race on the backwaters of Ashtamudi titled- 'Ashtamudi Jalotsavam'. Organised as a new event among the festivals of boat races in Kerala, a trophy in the name of the President will be given to the winners of Ashtamudi regatta.
The Ashtamudi Jalotsavam or President's Trophy boat race will be held on November 1st every year. The inaugural race will be held on August 30, 2011.
