As part of its efforts to attract more tourists to the State, Kerala Tourism would soon take up a Rs. 500 million project for the development of basic infrastructure in tourist destinations. "The project will be completed in this fiscal year itself," said Mr. A. P. Anilkumar, Minister for Tourism, Kerala.
Improvement of facilities at Kovalam, Ponmudi, Varkala, Ashtamudi, Alappuzha and Wayanad will be taken up in the project. Development of new destinations and circuits such as the eastern corridor of Malappuram and Kozhikode districts, Nila, Vypeen, Paravoor, Thalassery and Vagamon has also been included in the project.
The eastern corridor of Malappuram and Kozhikode districts will be developed as a tourist circuit by linking Nilambur, Vandoor and Thusharagiri on the foothills of Western Ghats.
The project includes a cultural tourist circuit with Nila as the focus. A detailed master plan will be prepared for the purpose. A heritage circuit for Fort Vypeen in Kochi and an eco-tourism project in Wayanad, having the potential to attract large number of domestic and foreign tourists to the State, also form part of the project.
Town squares at Paravoor, the gateway to Muziris, the helipad atop the laterite cliff at Varkala that overlooks the Arabian Sea, more facilities for tourists coming to watch Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alappuzha and paragliding and other adventure sports at Vagamon are also included in the project.
