Spice Route Heritage project

Kerala Tourism along with the UNESCO is all set to develop 'Spice Route Heritage Project' which is intended to literally spice up the tourism sector of Kerala. The project aims at opening new vistas in the field of tourism and historical research in Kerala.

"Impressed with the Muziris Heritage Project, the UNESCO team suggested the Tourism Department make a plan for developing the Spice Route, which would revive the glory of spice trade in Kerala," said Mr. M. Sivasankar, Director of Tourism. Kerala has already allotted Rs.250 million for the preliminary activities of the Spice Route Heritage Project, said Mr. Sivasankar.

The proposed Spice Route Heritage Project will connect almost all districts in Kerala. Places like Thiruvananthapuram, Anchuthengu, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kochi, Ponnani, Panthalayani, Parappanangadi, Beypore, Kozhikode, Thalassery, Kannur and Bekal would be included in the route. Besides, the ancient trade routes in North Kerala will be connected to the Muziris Heritage Project.

The Spice Route Heritage Project would also link the cardamom and tea cultivation in Wayanad, Ancharakkandy - Asia's largest cinnamon farm, spice trading centres at Valiyangadi in Kozhikode, the dhow building centre at Beypore and the proposed Kunhali Marakkar Museum at Kottakkal.

Malabar, a major trade centre in the early centuries will be the major attraction in this project, as it will attract more tourists to the variety of spice products, plantations, inland waterways and heritage spots.
