Plastic-free Thekkady

Tourists visiting Thekkady, please keep in mind that you cannot carry plastic bags to Thekkady. With the active participation of the public, student police cadets, police, merchant associations and resorts' managements, the tourist town of Thekkady says 'no' to plastics. The ban on plastic has been implemented in the panchayat with the help of the Periyar Tiger Reserve, which implemented plastic ban inside the forest area as part of the Responsible Tourism (RT) project.

The campaign for plastic ban had the active participation of police. They along with student police cadets cleaned the 4 km road from Kumily to Thekkady. Even foreign tourists participated in collecting plastic bottles and collected bags dumped on the roadside.  For the proper implementation of the ban, the grama Panchayat has formed a society-Clean Kumily and Green Kumily. Now the shops in Thekkady use 'Thumpi' paper bags supplied by the Kudumbashree units.
