Training programme at IHMCT
Started under the scheme - Hunar Se Rozgar (employment through training) of the Union Ministry of Tourism, the Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (IHMCT) at Kovalam had taken the initiative to train economically disadvantaged groups.
The scheme envisages training and upgrading manpower, capitalizing on the vast tourism potential of the country and imparting professional expertise to the local population. The training for the underprivileged youth is provided through a short-term course on food production and food service. The training will create opportunities for employment generation in both urban and rural tourism sector.
The trainees are also made to understand the hospitality culture and would be made aware of the rules and regulations in the tourism sector. Training is given in soft skill or life skills such as courtesy, punctuality, work ethics, self-discipline and self-confidence.
Under this scheme, various courses offered at IHMCT are on six-week full time course on food and beverage service, eight-week full time course in food production, six-week full time course on housekeeping utility and eight-week full time course in bakery and patisserie. Depending on the duration of the courses, students are eligible for a stipend of Rs. 2000/- and Rs. 1500. For more details on these courses, visit www.ihmctkovalam.org.
