A Vedic tradition is set to commence in Kerala
It is a 3000-year-old ritual as prescribed in the Vedic texts and Kerala is going to witness it at the village of Panjal in the Thrissur district of Kerala from April 4 to 15, 2011. 'Athirathram' - considered as the ultimate in 'yaagas' or rituals involving elaborate ceremonies in the presence of fire, is going to take place once again in Kerala, after it was last performed in 1975.
The very purpose of this 'yaagam' is to bring peace and prosperity to mankind and well-being of all flora and fauna. Conducted under the initiative of Varthathe Trust, the re-enactment of the ritual 'Athirathram' in its purest form is meant to spread the message on the need for preserving and practicing inherited rituals for the betterment of the society. This ritual is seen as yet another opportunity for the organizers to prove the fact that the chanting of 'mantras' and worshipping of 'agni' (fire) using materials from nature, energize and protect the environment.
The upcoming 'Athirathram yaagam' would also witness the presence of many national and international universities which are keen to observe and study the possibilities of this 'yaagam' for the betterment of the environment and mankind.
