The green panthers and eco-tourists can look forward to the new attractions at Thenmala Ecotourism destination. The new facilities slated to come up at Thenmala are waterfront huts, signages and interpretation boards in all zones, shops at dam junction, a snack shop in the Thenmala Ecotourism Promotion Society's (TEPS) parking area and the renovation of musical dancing fountain. A project worth 4.9 million has been approved by the department.
The musical dancing fountain, one of the major attractions at Thenmala will be renovated by adding new grid formations. To provide comfortable accommodation to visitors, the authorities have decided to set up waterfront huts near TEPS leisure zone, near the Kallada River. Five huts will be constructed along the river's retaining wall with a view of the riverfront.
A snacks bar and coffee vending machine will be provided in the Thenmala Ecotourism Promotion Society (TEPS) parking area. At the dam junction, eight shops will be set up and these shops will be handed over to the local community through the panchayat.
Signage and interpretation boards will come up in all zones. The signages will function as a travel self-guide for visitors. Better interpretation facility along the trails will help visitors to get more information on the ecosystem, destination, eco-practices observed and conservation aspects.
Set up in 2001 as country's first planned ecotourism destination, Thenmala Eco-tourism destination in Kollam District is situated about 72 km from Thiruvananthapuram the capital city of Kerala.
