Beach buggies - an adventure sport in Puthuvype beach, Kochi
Beach buggies or off-road vehicles, ideal for driving along beaches are becoming popular as part of adventure tourism in the Puthuvype beach in Kochi. Beach buggies, the four-wheelers, do not tumble easily and are a delight for adventure-seeking people. They also have a reverse gear and can swerve on sand. Besides youth, beach buggies have also become a hit among women and children.
Initially introduced in the Cherai beach by Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), the buggies have now been shifted to the shallower Puthuvype beach, which also has a bigger coastline. Also, the Puthuvype beach is much nearer to the city of Kochi from where visitors can see ships passing at a distance and also the Fort Kochi beachfront.
The DTPC is planning to purchase more buggies. There are fixed rates for 30 minute and hour-long drives. Beach buggies are permitted to operate only on the southern and northern sides of the beach.
The Puthuvype beach, part of Vypin Island in Kochi, is situated about 5 km west of High Court Junction in Ernakulam.
