'Kerala Clean Destination Drive' launched
Mr. Oommen Chandy, Chief Minister of Kerala, inaugurated the 'Kerala Clean Destination Drive' campaign at Kovalam in the capital recently. Modernization of the tourist village and sanitation initiatives will be implemented in the beach destination as part of the project.
Mr. A. P. Anilkumar, Minister for Tourism said that road-shows on the campaign will be held at one centre in each district. This is for the first time that Kerala Tourism has come up with a mass cleaning drive for major tourist destinations in the State. The department will also implement innovative projects to attract more tourists and thereby to increase the growth rate of arrivals which is at present 11 percent.
The Chief Minister also launched Rs. 300 million development project for Kovalam at the function. An integrated waste disposal scheme at a cost of Rs.13.8 million is a highlight of the project. A drinking water scheme, beautification of the
Idakkal area (cluster of rocks dividing the beach), beach drainage system, renovation of the road to Eves' beach, development of parking area and solar lighting also form part of the project.
