Onam Week celebrations 2012
The Onam week celebrations this year, organized by the Kerala Tourism, commenced with the hoisting of the 'Onappathaka' (festival flag) by the Hon'ble Mizoram Governor, Mr. Vakkom Purushothaman on August 28 at the premises of the Kanakakkunnu Palace. The state-level celebrations were inaugurated by Chief Minister Mr. Oommen Chandy at the Chandrasekharan Nair stadium on that day. Veteran actor Mr. Madhu, who has completed his fifty years in Malayalam cinema, was honoured during the inaugural ceremony. The rest of the venues include the Nishagandhi auditorium, Suryakanti, Sopanam, Theerthapada Mandapam, Gandhi Park, VJT Hall, Poojapura Grounds, Museum Compound, Sathyan Memorial Hall and few more. The week long Onam celebrations changed the state to a stage of cultural fiesta with several performances of classical arts and music shows. A colourful cultural procession of about 130 floats and around 2,500 performing artistes marked the culmination of the Onam week celebrations.
