The 2014 Nishagandhi Puraskaram has been bestowed on celebrated Bharatanatyam exponent Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam for her contribution to Indian classical dance. Instituted by Kerala Tourism, the annual Nishagandhi Puraskaram honours eminent personalities in the fields of dance and music. The award carries Rs. 1,50,000, a citation and a statuette.
Known for her distinctive style and versatility, Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam has performed Bharatanatyam at various prestigious venues and festivals across the globe. “She is without doubt one of the finest exponents of Bharatanatyam in the country and has played a significant role in reinvigorating the dance form across the world. Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam is also responsible for developing new techniques to expand the vocabulary of Bharatanatyam beyond the scope of its traditional tenets,” said Mr. A. P. Anilkumar, Minister for Tourism, Kerala.
