Fort Kochi will soon emerge as the first differently abled-friendly heritage destination in Kerala. This is as part of Kerala Tourism’s initiative to provide basic facilities for the differently abled at major tourist destinations in the state.
Further, it is envisaged to equip all major tourist destinations in the state with basic facilities for leisure and recreation for people with special needs by December 3rd, International Day for Persons with Disabilities, as part of fulfilling the UNWTO goal of ‘Tourism for All’.
“We are on the job to create basic facilities for leisure and recreation for people with special needs by 3rd December in major destinations,” Mr. A.C. Moideen, Minister for Tourism, Kerala has said.
Ramps and wheelchairs will be made available in destinations and hotels, resorts, and house boats will be equipped with special rest rooms. Accessible food outlets, crutches, electric wheelchairs, and so on will be made available. Moreover the guides along with the personnel manning information counters will be imparted training in sign language. Signages in Braille and tactile maps for the visually impaired are also envisaged to be set up.
