Soon 80 prominent tourist destinations in Kerala will get a major makeover, all thanks to the ‘Green Carpet’ initiative launched by Kerala Tourism. The one month project envisages making the destinations tourist ready for the high volume tourist influx in the upcoming season.
Mr. U.V. Jose, Director, Kerala Tourism, said that the project is focussed on not just welcoming tourists but also on long term infrastructure development in destinations.
All the measures necessary to be undertaken to overcome the existing shortcomings in various destinations have been formulated and will be completed in a time bound manner by October 31. A Destination Management Committee comprising people’s representatives, NGOS, and officials have been constituted to execute and monitor the project. A cleanliness drive in these destinations by roping in the public was also organised. In order to ensure continued management of these destinations, Destination Managers are being appointed.
The service of the students in the NSS technical cell would be ensured in all destinations. An orientation programme for these students will be held to ensure the successful completion of the project. A review meeting to oversee the works undertaken till now is also in the offing. The multi-agency participatory campaign involves engagement of tourism and trade stakeholders, local self-government bodies, the National Service Scheme Technical Cell under the Directorate of Technical Education, Suchitwa Mission, Kudumbasree, educational institutions and NGOs, apart from other social organisations.
