Shankumugham Beach to Get a Facelift
The Shankumugham Beach at Thiruvananthapuram which attracts hordes of visitors on a daily basis is all set to get a major facelift with the new master plan developed by Kerala Tourism. The plan is envisaged to beautify the beach and its premises, provide better parking facilities and clean facilities to visitors. The renovation will be carried out ensuring minimal use of concrete structures. This makeover is envisaged to be completed by mid next year which is in addition to the beautification project being carried out presently at the beach. The Muthuchippi Park will soon become a biodiversity park and shade trees will be planted here. The Tsunami Park will be used as a parking facility thereby solving the parking woes of scores of visitors who visit the beach on a daily basis.
The Chacha Nehru Traffic Training Park established in the beach to instill awareness about traffic rules among children will also be renovated. It has been decided to restore the centuries old ‘chakra theertha kulam’ with the help of the Department of Archaeology. This historic structure is associated with the ‘arattu’ ceremony of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Thiruvananthapuram.
The eateries in the beach area will be moved to a food court which will be set up near the Tsunami Park. Those manning the food stalls would have to wear uniform and only those eateries which obtain license from the Food Safety Department will be allowed to run the joint. Kudumbasree workers will be deployed to ensure cleanliness at the beach and its premises. More lifeguards will be posted to ensure the safety of tourists. The plan will also witness setting up of more toilets and separate bins for plastic waste and bio waste.
