Champakulam Race Called off
The Champakulam Moolam Boat Race, which marks the beginning of the boat race season in Kerala, has been called off on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, as it cannot be conducted following the social distancing norms. The boat race, which is conducted annually to mark the idol installation at the Sree Krishnaswamy Temple in Ambalappuzha, was scheduled to be held on July 4 this year. It is conducted on the Moolam day of Midhunam (June-July) and is a much-awaited event for the local community. Usually, the festivities will see Chundan Valloms (snake boats) cruising across the placid backwaters, with over 100 oarsmen rowing the boats to the finish line. The boat race season normally sees over 25 races in the backwaters, including the much celebrated Nehru Trophy Boat Race.
