Extending support to the State Government’s Subiksha Keralam project, an initiative to ensure food security in view of COVID-19 pandemic, Kerala Tourism has turned a one-acre unused plot at Akkulam in Thiruvananthapuram into a banana farm. Mr. Kadakampally Surendran, Minister for Tourism, Co-operation and Devaswoms, Government of Kerala launched the banana farming project on the land owned by the Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala at Akkulam.

The plot has now been turned into the farm, embodying the concept of 'Subiksha Keralam' project. The saplings which were sourced from various farmers in the city were planted by the staff of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Thiruvananthapuram.

Different types of plantain trees have been planted as part of the project being implemented in association with the Department of Agriculture, Government of Kerala. "The land was lying unused and the focus was on better utilisation of resources in order to ensuring food security, especially in times like these when we are in the middle of a pandemic," said an official.

Apart from this, DTPC has also started fish farming in a natural pond at the Children's Park in Akkulam.
