Double-decker Bus-shaped Restaurant comes up in Vaikom

Published in Newsletter Issue No. 340 - December 2021

The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) has launched a restaurant on a KSRTC double-decker bus near the Vaikom boat jetty in the Kottayam district. The restaurant was initiated as part of ‘Foodie Wheels’ project which was launched by the Tourism Minister Mr. P. A. Mohamed Riyas and the Transport Mr. Minister Antony Raju.

The swanky two-tier café along the scenic Vaikom backwaters offers delicious local cuisine at a reasonable rate. The ground floor is air-conditioned and can accommodate 20 people while the open-air restaurant upstairs has seating for a maximum of 24 people. There is a dine-in option at the open lawn as well.

The bus has been painted yellow with illustrations drawn over it. The catchphrase “Your food stop”! is so apt; you can have tasty food and at the same time enjoy the amazing beauty of Vaikom backwaters. The area around the bus has been landscaped neatly with lights adding that extra charm to its evening beauty.

The whole concept is said to be inspired from Sayahna garden restaurant at Hotel Mascot in Thiruvananthapuram.

A major Responsible Tourism (RT) destination, Vaikom has a lot in store to fascinate the traveller in you. Palm-fringed backwaters, tiny country boats, dirt roads, tireless feet, innocent faces and many more incredible sights await you at Vaikom village.

More ‘Foodie Wheels’ Cafes
The Tourism Department plans to open ‘Foodie Wheels’ restaurants across 20 major tourist destinations in the state. The Tourism Minister said the upcoming ‘Foodie Wheels’ will follow the model of that which is set up at Vaikom.

Economic feasibility and employment generation were two features of the project. Old bridges not used for traffic anymore will be converted into food streets through a project executed in cooperation with the Public Works Department.
