Tourism and hospitality staff falling in the 18 to 45 age group in the state have been made eligible to get vaccinated against Covid-19. This comes after the Department of Health, Government of Kerala, issued an order including hotels and restaurants staff as frontline workers to get the vaccine on priority.

Based on suggestions from several departments, the state government included 32 groups in the newly created list of frontline workers who need vaccine on priority. The frontline workers’ list now includes field staff of the Indian Railways, airport and ground staff, KSRTC drivers and conductors and journalists.

The Tourism Department had requested the state government to include Tourism and Hospitality staff as frontline workers for vaccination as it will help in reviving the sector which was severely affected by the pandemic.

There are more than 15 lakh people employed in the travel and tourism sector in the state. Constituting 10% of Kerala’s GDP, the tourism sector is the fourth largest revenue generator for the state after Excise, Pravasi and Lottery.
