Kozhikode Beach Gets a Facelift
Kozhikode South Beach has undergone a massive renovation with better seating arrangements, garden and landscaping. The renovation was carried out under the aegis of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) and the district administration.
The renovation will help in improving the tourism potential of the beach, the Tourism Minister Mr. P. A. Mohammed Riyas said, after opening the renovated beach on July 1. The Ports Minister Ahmed Devarkoil said visitors to the beach will get a glimpse of the culture, traditions and sculptures of Kozhikode.
A children’s play area, a food counter, ramps for the disabled, street lights and CCTV cameras are some of the new additions near the beach. The walls along the beach are strikingly different from the earlier ones. Pictures of writers like Vaikom Muhammed Basheer, M. T. Vasudevan Nair, and S. K. Pottekkat, lyricist Girish Puthenchery, composer M. S. Baburaj, and actor Kuthiravattom Pappu adorn the walls. Kozhikode’s famed delicacies as well as the culture and traditions of the district are also depicted in the street art on the walls.
Along with selfie corners with ‘I Love Kozhikode’ and ‘Nammude Kozhikode’ structures, a representation of a snakes-and-ladders game, and a huge chess board were also installed at the beach.
The Butt Road Beach Bliss Park was also renovated with new additions such as a jet fountain, a cafeteria, a children’s park, cycle and skating tracks.
One of the best places in the district to watch the setting sun, the Kozhikode Beach is popular among locals as well as foreigners. Apart from an old lighthouse and ancient piers, there are food joints selling a variety of delicacies near the beach.
