As part of virtual Onam celebrations, Kerala Tourism conducted Loka Pookkalam or Global Pookkalam Competition to offer a platform for Malayalis and all people who love Kerala to connect and celebrate Onam virtually. Open from August 13 to August 23, 2021, the online contest was divided into two categories - one for people residing in Kerala and the other for those outside the state. Around 2,000 people participated in the contest and around 70% of them were from within Kerala.
Remarking about the increased relevance of the ideals of unity and humanity, that Onam brings home in the present times, the Chief Minister lauded the Tourism Department for choosing “Universal Humanity” as the theme for the Global Pookkalam competition.
The Tourism Minister Mr. P. A. Mohammed Riyas said the Global Pookkalam competition will spread the message of unity among the Malayalis living across the world. “Usually, expatriate Malayalis celebrate Onam along with fellow members of their associations. This time, the Pookkalam contest helped them celebrate Onam with all Malayalis across the globe,” he added.
Individuals, organisations / associations from across the globe vied for honours by arranging the flower carpet and uploading images on the website.
The contestants will be awarded first, second and third prizes in two categories: individual and organization / association. There will be separate judging panels for these segments. The winners will earn attractive prizes. Besides, there will be consolation prizes (20 in each category) and certificates of participation. Also, all participants (except those who win the 52 prizes mentioned above) will be given a special ‘Onam Gift’.
