Tourism Projects at Valanthakad Island, Cherai Beach set for Inauguration
Two tourism projects listed under the 100-day projects of state government are nearing completion while work on another two is set to begin in Ernakulam district. The Rs. 99 lakh Responsible Tourism project in Valanthakad Island and the green-carpet tourism scheme at Cherai Beach are set for inauguration.
A walkway, a bridge, a floating tourist-facilitation centre and a boat jetty are part of the project at Valanthakad Island that houses 50-odd families. It is the first Responsible Tourism project in Ernakulam district. Tourists may have to stay in the village for at least three hours if they wish to see and experience the rustic life there. Fishing is the main livelihood of the people in the island, which is spread across 200 acres on the outskirts of Kochi near Nettoor in the Vembanad Backwaters.
In the Rs.55 lakh, green-carpet tourism scheme at Cherai Beach, an observation post for lifeguards, differently abled-friendly toilets, CCTVs and safety units will be installed. Located around 25 km from Ernakulam, the beach is a favourite haunt of those looking for a relaxing swim in the backdrop of coconut groves. The seashells found here are unique and there are chances of spotting dolphins in the area.
A Rs. 2 crore pilgrim facilitation centre will come up at Poothotta Mahadeva Temple and a Rs. 65 lakh children’s park will be built at Manappattuchira in Malayatoor, Ernakulam DTPC Secretary S. Vijayakumar said.
