Aymanam Village among 30 Best Places to visit in 2022
Aymanam, a quaint village in Kottayam district which was the setting for Arundhati Roy’s Booker Prize-winning novel The God of Small Things, has made it to international tourism magazine Condé Nast’s list of 30 best places to visit in the world in 2022.
Aymanam, that lies beside the backwaters near Kottayam town, has found itself in the same league as Sri Lanka, Bhutan, London, Oklahoma (in the US), Seoul and Istanbul as among the 30 best places to visit in 2022. Sikkim, Meghalaya, Goa, Kolkata and Odisha are among the Indian locales on the list.
The Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission launched in the village played a major role in identifying Aymanam as the best tourist spot. It trained home-stay operators, community tour leaders and others in RT practices. This in turn resulted in an increase in the number of tourists visiting the locale to savour its cuisine as well as culture and enjoy village life through cycle tours and walking trails through paddy fields, said Mr K. Rupesh Kumar, State Co-ordinator of the RT Mission.
The state government declared Aymanam a model-tourism village in 2020, following which it shared space with Kumarakom - another popular RT destination. Aymanam bagged the ‘One to Watch Award’ of World Travel Mart in 2021.
Flanked by Vembanad Lake and Meenachil River, the village is known for its unparalleled natural beauty and cultural diversity. Besides taking a cruise through quaint waters, tourists can visit its heritage buildings, shrines and witness vibrant arts and art forms.
