Kappad Beach gets Green Destination Award

Published in Newsletter Issue No. 351 - November 2022

Kappad Beach in Kozhikode district is among the 100 tourism destinations in the world that have come up with sustainable models at the Future of Tourism summit held in Athens, Greece. The list was prepared by Green Destination, a Netherlands-based global tourism destination certification council.

The only Blue Flag beach in Kerala, Kappad was feted for its eco-friendly developmental model, which involves making use of solar energy, executing proper waste management, and ensuring conservation of indigenous and local biodiversity.

Besides Kappad, Srirangam town in Tamil Nadu is the only other destination in India that has found a place on the list. Srirangam has been included in the Heritage Protection category. The destinations included in the list have been nominated for awards by default at the ITB Travel Mart to be held in Berlin, Germany, next year.

The Kozhikode District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) received the Green Destination Award for the Kappad beach from the regional coordinator of Green Destinations. The award comes close on the heels of the DTPC winning the award for the best tourism promotion council in the country for the year 2018 from the Government of India.

Kappad Beach has played an important role in the history of Kerala. It was on these shores over 500 years ago, in 1498 to be precise, that 170 men led by Vasco da Gama first stepped when the famed explorer and sailor landed in India. A visit to Kozhikode is incomplete without a visit to this legendary site. The spice route flourished through this beach.
